Description

The Receptor is a 10-ton cast concrete abstract sculpture that was inspired by the iris of the human eye and the photoreceptor cones that enable vision. Sculptor Tamsie Ringler (b. 1963) originally cast the work on site at the Fanconia Sculpture Park in Minnesota in 2004.

Ringler used agricultural drain tile and a sawdust hopper as the forms for the 8’3” x 8’3” x 8’9” cone-like object. After being displayed at the sculpture park, the artwork was exhibited at Navy Pier in 2005, and then installed for two years in a public park in Oak Park. The Touhy Park Advisory Council enthusiastically supported the idea of installing the sculpture in their North Side park. Members of the advisory council have described the sculpture as a giant ice cream cone, while others liken it to a megaphone, or funnel.
