What is Juneteenth?
Juneteenth recognizes and commemorates the true emancipation of all remaining enslaved people following the enactment of the Emancipation Proclamation in 1862. Freedom finally came for the remaining enslaved Africans on June 19, 1865, when Union troops arrived in Galveston Bay, Texas.
