Gustavo Cortiñas’ Night Out in the Park series, The Drum Also Sings, The Drum Also Sobs, explores the deep emotional resonance of rhythm through powerful percussion-driven storytelling. With a rich blend of jazz, experimental, and Latin influences, Cortiñas uses the drum as both an instrument of expression and introspection, weaving sounds that evoke joy, sorrow, and everything in between. The series delves into the drum's melodic capacity to convey the human experience, illustrating how rhythm can speak, mourn, and celebrate. Through this exploration, Cortiñas invites listeners to hear the unspoken emotions that drums uniquely communicate. The concert will feature three world-class drummers/percussionists from contrasting backgrounds, all of whom reside in the city of Chicago and who are known for their distinctive melodic approaches to drumming: Isaiah Spencer, Marcus Evans, and Gustavo Cortiñas.
