Description

Compost is a rich source of organic matter and nutrients for your garden, but composting in a community garden can be challenging. Mismanaged and poorly-constructed bins can provide nesting spaces for rodents, emit odors, and facilitate the spread of weeds and plant diseases. Well-managed compost can divert waste from landfills and enrich your soil by attracting beneficial bacteria, fungi, and macroorganisms to otherwise lifeless soil in typical raised beds. In this discussion, we'll go over the basics for:- selecting a pre-made outdoor compost bin or constructing your own- pest-proofing your bin- going beyond ‘greens and browns’ to ensure trouble-free compost- working with garden members, volunteers, and neighbors to effectively manage bins- harvesting and using your compost
